Sampler from 1893. Stitched using cross-stitch on Aida or linen with DMC floss. PDF-pattern only.
I created this cross-stitch pattern from a sampler in my private collection, embroidered by Hilda Granberg in 1893.
Hilda broderade sin märkduk i två färger. Märkduken är sydd i korsstygn med två garntrådar
on an uneven, coarse fabric resembling Aida or possibly Penelope canvas.
The double border in brown and green visible in the photograph is woven into the fabric and has not been included in the pattern.
Little else is known about Hilda Granberg. The name appears in several Swedish historical records,
but it has not been possible to establish who embroidered the sampler.
The meaning of the initials and the numbers beneath them is also unclear. Perhaps Hilda was
simply practising stitching different letters and numbers.
